Board Games

Budding board gamers are welcome to engage in collaborative and strategic game play. We will explore a wide range game mechanics across an eclectic collection of international board games. Anyone keen to "trade a wood for a sheep"? If so, "it's time to toss the dice". (Language: English / German)

Creative Dance Theatre

Dance AG is about learning to dance! This AG involves moving the body to music, learning steps and coordination and becoming confident to perform in front of other students, teachers and the general public. (Language: English / German)

Kids Yoga*

Yoga is an ancient science that helps create health and well-being by building self-awareness, strength, and flexibility for the mind and body. Yoga is a fun way for children to develop a variety of important skills in a nurturing, non-competitive and fun environment. In our Yoga classes we examine different topics every time and illuminate them holistically. How does it look like? On the topic of Africa, for example, the children get to know facts about the country to begin with, dance and drum to African music and move in African animal poses. At the end of the class, they hear a meditative story to conclude the lesson. At the same time, they learn and consolidate new vocabularies around the topic. After a busy school day yoga is the perfect thing.
The instructional language of this AG is only in German in order to enhance language learning. (Language: German)

Little Scientists

Are you interested in nature, technology, mathematics? This is the right workshop for you! With experiments and the research cycle you will be able to explore a lot of interesting things. Ask questions about nature, formulate hypotheses, develop predictions, gather data, experiment, document and present your findings. You are on the way to becoming a great scientist! Mandarin (Beginners only)

Why should our children learn Mandarin now? Because Mandarin is becoming a major world language. Thanks to the support of the school, GISS has provided this opportunity for our children to learn Mandarin at school. Learning Mandarin will be fun! Children will also gain knowledge about Chinese culture, customs and its history and are encouraged to cultivate their talents and strengthen their confidence through stories and games. The class is designed for children with no or some previous knowledge of Chinese. Katrina Chou is a native Mandarin speaker, qualified teacher, writer/ translator and currently tutoring a Year 11/12 IB Class in Chinese Literature. (Language: English)

Out and About

Explore the delights of our local community! Each week we will venture out of the school to discover the many playgrounds, bushwalks, parks and beaches that our local community has to offer. Come along to climb, slide, run, jump and splash through the afternoon! (Language: English / German)

Taekwondo

Allowing your children to participate in Taekwondo is a fantastic way for them to explore and develop lifelong skills. Martial arts not only play an important role in exercise, but also promotes mental and psychological growth. This program provides a fun, challenging environment for the students to discover Taekwondo and all it can offer, whilst helping their confidence and self-control develop through games and challenges both physically and mentally".
Darran McNulty is a certified Australian Taekwondo Coach, a 3rd Dan Black Belt and has been teaching at GISS for the last 10 years. (Language: English)

Tennis

The focus during tennis is on basic hitting techniques and rules of the game. Students will be divided into groups according to their ability. (Language: English)

Wind instruments

Students who are interested in learning a wind instrument or are already playing one are very welcome. After the AG students may arrange additional private lessons with Mr. Boky. (Language: English)

Thursday Co-curricular Activities - Semester 2, 2021

African Drumming

We will start with a short introduction to basic drumming techniques to safely play our drums and hand percussions. Playing drumming games, chanting and using the rhythm of speech to create rhythmical patterns, we will engage everyone in creating groovy rhythms. Drumming is enjoying playing together and having lots of fun. The instructional language of this AG is only in German in order to enhance language learning. (Language: English / German)

Chess

For Chess beginners, the mysteries of the game will be discovered. For those of you who are more advanced, this is the chance to improve your game. (Language: English)

STEAM (TinkerTank)

Project based and hands-on learning for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) education to develop hard skills for future careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Additionally, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration and design thinking skills will be put to practice in a fun and engaging environment. (Language: English)

Costumes*

Are you creative and interested in trying out making your own costumes? In this AG, we will design, plan and make our own costumes. Maybe you will be the winner of the next Halloween parade!
The instructional language of this AG is only in German in order to enhance language learning. (Language: German)

Drama

Lights, Camera, Action!! Ever wanted to know what it's like to be on a film set? Have you wanted to learn the art of acting for the camera? This is your opportunity to learn the skills to become proficient at acting for the screen. Students will rehearse, make acting choices, costume / make up and shoot their scenes under lights. All under the guidance of actor / acting coach Paul Winchester. Paul has been a professional actor for 25 years + and owns / runs the Point Break Drama Acting studio in Dee Why. A series of scenes will be filmed & edited by Paul, so students have a take home show reel of their work. (Language: English)

Musical AG - "A Christmas Item"

The Musical AG will be working towards a Theatre performance for our Christmas Concert in the last week of school. During the practices we will be singing, dancing, play acting and of course laughing! Come along and join in creating our annual Christmas Performance. Then once you have decided on your favorite character, we can begin learning scripts and songs and making the costumes for the show. If you love the stage, then this is the right AG for you. School garden

Our School Garden AG promotes learning with all senses. We will continue to plan, establish and care for our school garden. We will also start with some landscaping. The students will be outside, develop their gardening skills and learn to take responsibility. They will acquire skills about native plants and environmentally appropriate behavior. Most importantly, this AG will foster a sense of enjoyment associated with plants, animals, and natural phenomena. (Language: English / German)

Soccer

Be the best, learn from the best -The AG offers a course designed to develop the potential of every child attending. It can enhance their confidence, improve ball skills while ensuring fun and a rewarding experience in every sense. Mr Mihajlovic is the owner and head coach of Youth Soccer Academy, boasting a successful international soccer career and has had a long relationship with our school. (Language: English)
