Years 5 & 6
In Years 5 and 6, our students undertake new subjects and become familiar with a wide variety of learning strategies. According to the German curriculum, with additional themes from the NSW curriculum, students commence studies in history, geography, biology, chemistry and physics in a way that challenges their natural curiosity and leads to a more comprehensive and deeper learning experience.
During primary school our students learn both German and English for 5 lessons a week with the aim of becoming genuinely bilingual. In Year 6, French is offered as an additional course of language study. Importantly, advanced studying methods are specifically targeted and fully integrated into our teaching programmes to help students develop into independent and self confident thinkers.
Year 7 to 10: German & English Stream
From Years 7 to 10, students can choose between the German or the English Stream.
In the English Stream, English is the primary language, German the second and French an optional third language. For admission to the English Stream, German is not a prerequisite. Key learning areas are taught in English and adhere to the NSW curriculum.
For other subjects such as art and physical education, the students of both streams are taught together in a combined class. These bi-lingual classes are effective in helping students to improve both their communication and second language skills.
With our ‘Learning Beyond the Classroom’ concept our students learn languages in a very enjoyable and natural way. For the English Stream students, contact with German families and native German speakers at school provides a real life experience of the German culture and way of life.
Students of the English Stream will progress to the IB Diploma programme after Year 10.
In the German Stream, key learning areas of mathematics, sciences, German and humanities are taught in German. The stream follows the German curriculum and leads to completion of the German ’Mittlerer Schulabschluss’ at the conclusion of Year 10. The successful completion of Year 10 exams allows students to enrol in the IB programme.
