Overview

The German International School is a co-educational school striving to develop each student’s full potential for their academic success and personal development for life beyond school. Students from more than 20 countries create an unique International character that induces intercultural understanding. Our intensive language immersion programme leads to bilingual competency in German and English.

In our work we commit to the development and the well-being of the “whole person” . In this respect the role of the class teacher is very important as someone who gives guidance and moral support. The class teacher also supports the personal development in respect to self-awareness and the mutual concern for the well-being of other members of the class.

Please find below a short overview over our school structure.

  • At Preschool we offer a bilingual immersion programme based on the Early Years Learning Framework of Australia as well as elements of best practice from around the world. Our highly qualified preschool teachers, experienced in Australia and Germany, create a caring environment for the children to learn their second language (German or English) through play in real and authentic situations, where they have a need to communicate in these languages. Through a close collaboration with the primary school teachers we enable a smooth transition from Preschool into Kindergarten.

  • In our Primary school (Kindergarten - Yr 4), where the main teaching language is German (except in English lessons), teaching programs are based on the curriculum of the German state Thüringen as well as the NSW curriculum. English speaking children without any prior knowledge in German can join us up to Year 3, as individual support is available in all Primary School classes.

  • Our Junior Secondary School  (German & English Stream)  commences with Year 5. Students will not only study numerous new subjects but also learn new methods to acquire knowledge. Lessons in the German Stream are taught predominantly in German. If students without prior knowledge of German want to join the school at a later stage they can do so in our English stream at the beginning of Year 7, (Or later when enrolling in Year 11 for the IB Diploma Programme) where we follow the NSW curriculum. As students progress in their studies they collaborate with the German stream in various subjects where the teaching language can be either German or English.

  • The academic focus in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is an excellent foundation for studying anywhere in the world. With up to 3 subjects available in German, the IB Diploma program at our school can be designed to be fully bilingual.
